I am outraged....

Being a mother, I was a little outraged by BC wanting to charge $50 to find out the sex of your baby when you go into your ultrasound. It is just crazy to think we have come to withholding information about your own child, and when he/she is still a part of you. Now for those of you who also don't know about BC health care, you have to pay monthly into the health care system too to help supplement it (some employers pay it for you, but not all of them), so it is amazing to see them being the first to also have this additional fee to find out the sex of your child. People keep telling us not to complain about having to pay any fees for our health care when you look at neighbours to the South, but isn't it why we live in Canada?
When I am already struggling between balancing work and spending time with my husband and child, the thought of adding any costs to being able to enjoy any part of parenthood is beyond frustrating and even heart wrenching. Can you ever find a balance between what is enough to provide everything for your family. Sure you might be thinking this is just finding out the sex of your baby and your child looses nothing, but everything I got to experience while being pregnant was mine to cherish and I wouldn't trade that in for anything. But to think I wouldn't be able to experience something because you couldn't afford the extra expense (or didn't want to take away money from saving for your child), is just a disgusting thought to me.

Tell me what you think!

  1. Only $50? Two of my friends who recently gave birth were told by the (very snotty) hospital ultrasound technicians that they will not give out the sex of the baby. They had to go to a private ultrasound clinic in Vancouver and pay $100 (although that included 3D imaging, actually, but still...). I think it's crazy. I know there are cultures that prefer boys to girls, but the majority just want to know what frickin' colour to paint the nursery!

However, another friend was told she was having a boy and she ended up having a girl! So it's not an exact science, I guess. But if you're willing to take the risk and the technician can see the sex, I don't see why they should be charging you for that. Having a baby is expensive enough!
